IMASA STATEMENT (COVID-19)

Date: 20/03/2020

Assalaamu Alaikum Warahmatullaahie Wabarakaatuh In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

All praises are due to the Almighty Allah in all His attributes and universal blessings upon the Leader of mankind, the beloved Nabi Muhammad (SAW)

The Islamic Medical Association of South Africa [IMASA], hereby presents an updated statement to the rapidly evolving situation in South Africa and has set forth guidance on managing the risk of crowding and the appropriate utilization of masaajid. However, we are concerned that despite significant efforts from many masaajid to comply, a large number of them have not accepted the guidance provided and continued to schedule prayers. The risk of crowding and spread of the virus is extremely concerning.

We must strictly enforce social distancing in order to reduce the speed of the spread of the disease.

The IMASA strongly opposes any continued use of masaajid and performing congregational salaat. The office of the masjid should remain functional for community support, wherein the resident Imam may perform salaat with a maximum jamaat of 5 musallees, standing 1 meter apart from each other. All carpets and wudhu - ablution facilities should be closed for use until deemed appropriate.

Our ongoing concerns

The IMASA expresses concern for the all vulnerable South Africans at this time and commends the government for the multipronged efforts. This is not an easy task.

The IMASA has a deep pain for South Africans and we urge all communities to support government efforts to reduce the scourge of this disease.

Al-Numan Ibn Bashir reported: The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said, “The parable of the Believers in their affection, mercy and compassion for each other is that of a body. When any limbs aches, the whole body reacts with sleeplessness and fever.” Sahih Bukhari 5665, Sahih Muslim 2586

We humbly request that all South Africans dig deep and increase contributions to charitable organizations. Start at home and in your businesses. Ensure all employees have sufficient food within their homes. Ensure their place of work is safe. Ensure safety during travel and using public transportation. If the use of public transportation is compulsory please assist employees with masks, goggles and gloves.

We also request additional focus on our elderly family and community members and those that are chronically unwell. Please assist them in attaining flu vaccinations.

The IMASA in association with Gift of the Givers is on the ground already across South Africa providing support to the community. Gift of the Givers has vowed to intervene wherever the need arises, focusing on equipping high risk medical personnel and purchasing the necessary medical supplies required to combat this virus. Doctors in their private practices are assisting the public through telephonic consultations to be fast tracked for testing. We have a number of members working at hospitals, within government, in multiple sectors supporting the coordinated efforts.

This is a long journey and we need to be prepared for it. The IMASA health professionals, are committed to supporting all South Africans hands on. Our clinics in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town are already seeing increased numbers. In addition to this we will be working closely with the Provincial Steercos to support government and our country in any way possible.

Oh Muslims, make every home a masjid and let us turn to Allah with sincere Dua and Istighfaar during these difficult times Inshaa Allah. The love and unity should remain in our hearts. Let this not be a source of division and hatred at a time when we so much need each other.

“If anyone saves a life, it shall be as though he had saved the lives of all Mankind.” Surah 5 Verse 32

May Allah grant shifa-e-kamila to the whole of mankind and may He guide and protect us all AAMEEN.

Jazaakallah Wassalaams
